5 Foods You Should Eat Every Day

by Celynn Erasmus on March 15, 2012

There are a multitude of foods that are fabulous for your health, but let’s face it: it’s simply impossible to eat a portion of each every single day! That is why I’ve identified 5 key foods that will help boost your energy levels and generally improve your health when you include them in your daily diet.

Oats

Oats may just be the best thing since sliced bread in the breakfast department. Oats are packed with minerals, vitamins and antioxidants and contains both soluble and insoluble fibre, so it can help guard against heart disease and keep blood sugar levels, well, level. Choose unprocessed oats such as rolled oats, not instant oats.

Walnuts

Walnuts are full of unsaturated fats and omega 3 fatty acids, that helps lower bad cholesterol levels and prevents heart disease. Rather than eat the whole packet though, eat 10 walnuts as a snack, or crush some over a salad or cooked vegetables for added crunch.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are renowned for their high content of lycopene, an anti-oxidant that helps diminish the harmful effects of oxidation.  Tomatoes are wonderfully versatile and can be used in virtually any meal. Why not make your own tomato sauce or salsa, you can save time by making larger quantities and freezing convenient portions for later use.

Avocado

A good source of the healthy monounsaturated fat, vitamin E and potassium. Using avocado as a healthy source of fat may even help you to lose weight! Just stick to a quarter or half an avocado as the correct portion. Try mashed avocado on wheat free toast seasoned with herb salt as a quick and filling meal on-the-run. Not only is avocado good for you from the inside, but mashed avocado makes for an interesting facial mask too!

Berries

All black and blue berries such as blackberries, blueberries and blackcurrants contain phytochemicals known as flavonoids which are powerful antioxidants which help to protect the body against oxidation and aging. Choose the frozen variety for easy all year access for your fruit smoothies and berry desserts.

5 Healthy Ways To Perk Up In The PM

by Celynn Erasmus on February 21, 2012

We all know the feeling. Everything is going fine until bam! 15h00 hits and you would easily sell your own grandma for a packet of crisps. Here are five quick to tips to help you increase your energy without compromising any healthy habits:

1. Take a deep breath

Slumped over in front of a computer isn’t exactly the best position for breathing. When fatigue hits, take five minutes to practice this simple breathing technique:

• Sit up straight.

• Imagine you’re growing taller or that you’re being pulled up by the top of your head towards the sky – this will make you drop your shoulders and straighten your back.

• Place your hands with fingertips touching just below your rib cage over your belly button.

• Inhale deeply through your nose. Your shoulders should stay still, but your chest and diaphragm should expand.

• Exhale through your mouth. Keep your lips pursed to control the exhale.

2. Go for a walk

A brisk, ten-minute walk, preferably outside in the fresh air, can do wonders for your energy levels. The exercise will improve your circulation and breathing more deeply will increase the uptake of oxygen in your bloodstream, helping you think more clearly.

3. Drink a glass of water

Even during a quiet day at the office, it is possible to become dehydrated if you don’t take in enough fluids. And don’t be fooled by all the cups of coffee and tea you drink throughout the day. Coffee and tea (with the exception of herbal teas) are mild diuretics and may actually contribute towards dehydration. Even mild dehydration can make you tired, listless and hamper your concentration, so a glass (or two) of water might be all you need.

4. Eat a snack

Although you might be craving for a high-fat high-carb pick-me-up, a simple apple might do the trick. Fresh fruits are packed with vitamins, minerals and slow releasing energy. No fresh fruit around? Look for a handful of dried fruit.

5. Enjoy a siesta

A short power nap can do wonders for your energy-levels. After all, most people in the Mediterranean can’t be wrong! If it is at all possible, take 15-20 minutes to close your eyes and relax. This may mean disappearing to your car if you cannot find a quiet spot in the office. Even if you don’t fall asleep, this short rest-period will help you relax and reduce your stress-levels and you may spend the rest of the afternoon in super charged mode!
